Empowering Personal Growth: The Role of Counselling for LGBTQ+ Individuals
The LGBTQ+ community has received more societal support in recent years, thanks to tireless activism. Individuals within the community, however, continue to face unique challenges that can be harmful to their mental and emotional well-being. Dealing with discrimination, coming out to loved ones, and working through one’s identity can all increase the risk of depression, anxiety, and other mental health concerns. Finding affirming and appropriate counselling for LGBTQ+ individuals can make a difference in a positive outcome and continuous personal growth.
What issues do LGBTQ+ individuals face?
Everyone’s journey is unique, of course, but there are some commonalities in the challenges that people in the LGBTQ+ community tend to face. These challenges can cause emotional damage and threaten their well-being. Just a few examples are:
- Family issues caused by rejection by family members of the LGBTQ+ individual.
- Harassment or discrimination from members of society, including homophobic comments.
- Dealing with others’ confusion or denial of their own gender identity or expression.
What is Counselling for LGBTQ+?
An LGBTQ+-friendly therapist will integrate LGBTQ+-affirmative therapy into their counselling plan for their client. This therapy is designed to provide advocacy and validation for LGBTQ+ individuals. Those who specialize in LGBTQ+ mental health will have specialized in clients with diverse gender identities and expressions as well as sexual orientations.
Some clients may need support while exploring their gender identity and/or sexual orientation. Counselling will focus on helping clients navigate mental health concerns and trauma related to the stigma and discrimination they have experienced.
What Should I Look for in an LGBTQ+-friendly therapist?
Look for a counsellor who explicitly states they are LGBTQ+-affirming. Make sure they are certified in the province where they practice. Look for additional education, experience and certification in LGBTQ+-affirming care.
Decide what you need in a therapist. Are you most comfortable if the counsellor is the same identity as you? Or is education and experience your priority? Do you need someone who knows how to support you as you navigate the complexities of gender-affirming healthcare?
Once you’ve found a promising counsellor, try out a few sessions. If you don’t feel as though it’s the right fit, it’s ok to move on.
