Eric is a registered clinical counsellor with a background in music therapy. He has worked with individuals, couples, and families facing a variety of life’s challenges including grief, mental health concerns, relationship challenges, and life transitions. He has experience working with youth as well as older adults and all ages in between. As a gay man, Eric is passionate about providing affirming therapy that is supportive and justice-oriented for all of his clients. Before obtaining his masters of counselling, Eric obtained a bachelors of music therapy and worked in mental health, substance use, and community settings. He believes that creativity is an important, unavoidable part of being alive. His music therapy background has taught him that therapy—like life—can be both serious and playful, ligtht and heavy at the same time.
Eric’s counselling work is guided by a humanistic and existential philosophy, meaning that he views many of the problems present in our lives as inherent parts of being human and that there is nothing wrong with being human. In his counselling work, he aims to help individuals feel more human, more connected to and fulfilled by the lives they lead, and to live life with a greater sense of acceptance and flexibility. He believes deeply in the power of acceptance—not as an alternative to change but as a powerful process which can allow meaningful change to occur. Eric’s approach to therapy seeks to not view any thought or feeling as inherently bad or problematic and works to help people change their relationships with their thoughts and feelings instead of trying to get rid of them.
While Eric believes in the great potential benefits of longer-term therapy, he is passionate about making therapy beneficial from the very first session. Supporting this, Eric has training in brief models of therapy including Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) and Focused Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (FACT) and even experience working in a single-session drop-in therapy setting.
Finally, Eric believes that therapy work is impossible to sum up in a few paragraphs. He aims for his work to be fluid, adaptive, and uniquely co-created between each of his clients and himself.
