A Conversation with Lauren Jennings

Meet The Team

Lauren Jennings is an intern counsellor at Lynn Valley Counselling Clinic, currently pursuing her Master’s in Counselling Psychology from Adler University. With over a decade of experience as an Occupational Therapist specializing in eating disorders, Lauren brings a deep understanding of the challenges faced by those with complex relationships with food, body image, and exercise.

Her experience in mental health has led her to counseling, where she’s driven by a passion for helping clients navigate life transitions, manage anxiety and depression, and process grief and loss. Known for her calm, supportive approach, Lauren values collaboration and believes in the healing power of humor to create a safe, empowering environment for her clients.

1. What inspired you to pursue a career in counselling?

My long-standing interest in people, relationships, and my current work in mental health as an Occupational Therapist. I currently work closely with adults with eating disorders who have experienced multiple traumatic events, stigma, and have felt misunderstood by the people and systems around them. I have learned an incredible amount from my clients over the years and they are part of the inspiration for me to take on a new direction as a counsellor. My professional background lends itself well to counselling as I am passionate about empowering clients and trusting in their own lived experience. When I thought about going back to school for counselling, I felt so excited, I knew it was the right thing to do.

2. What aspects of your practice ignite your passion the most?

Supporting and watching someone get to know themselves better and then use that knowledge as a source of power in their lives.

3. How would you describe your guiding principles and methodology in your practice?

I take a trauma-informed and holistic approach. I aim to create an inclusive and collaborative space for clients.  I’m interested in using mindfulness and somatic approaches in my practice as a way to help clients tune into to their inherent wisdom. My goal is to foster a sense of expertise in my clients and support them to build on their internal and external resources to live meaningful lives outside of the counselling room.

4. Tell us a little bit about what you like to do outside of work!

I love to go out for food with friends and laugh the night away. Travelling is a big part of my life and I’ve been lucky enough to do quite a bit. I just got back from Ireland! Also, a daily dose of music and comedy keeps me going.
