A Conversation with Jess Picco

Meet The Team

We’re excited to welcome Jess to the Lynn Valley Counselling team! Jess, currently pursuing her Masters in Counselling Psychology at Adler University, takes a holistic approach to mental health, recognizing the deep connections between mind, body, and community. Passionate about supporting individuals facing depression, anxiety, and life transitions, Jess creates a non-judgmental space for clients to explore their identities. As a queer woman, she values collaboration and empowers clients to share their stories at their own pace.

What Inspired You to Pursue a Career in Counseling?

My career pursuit began with a focus on physical health, but I soon discovered a more profound passion for mental health and the holistic approach counselling takes to understand individual and community wellness. Personal experiences with mental health challenges and witnessing the struggles of those close to me further fueled my interest in this field. I’ve always been captivated by people’s stories, and I consider it a privilege to be entrusted with them, a responsibility I hold with great care.

Which Aspects of Your Practice Ignite Your Passion the Most?

For me, community is essential, and I see counselling as a bridge to a community when we may need it most. I look forward to helping clients find this support system while discovering inner strength and wisdom. I’m also excited to put my learning and experience thus far into practice as I start this new chapter with Lynn Valley Counselling.

How Would You Describe Your Guiding Principles and Methodology in Your Practice?

Currently, my practice is guided by Satir Theory and Narrative Theory, both of which take a systems approach. This means I view clients within the context of their relationships and environment, understanding the reciprocal influence between them and the systems they are part of. I prioritize honesty, compassion, creativity, and safety, striving to bring these values into every counselling session. My goal is for clients to feel secure and heard as they navigate their challenges.

Tell Us a Little Bit About What You Like to Do When You’re Off the Clock!

I enjoy a variety of activities — Some days, you’ll find me playing rugby or spending time in nature; others, I might be painting or cooking a new recipe. I love my comforts and I love to try new things. My family and friends are also very important to me, and I make it a point to nurture those relationships often.
