A Conversation With Erin McArthur

Meet The Team

Erin’s path to counseling has been shaped by her diverse experiences, particularly her role as a Sexual Health Educator. In this capacity, she supported individuals of all ages as they navigated concerns related to sexuality and sexual health. This work not only honed her skills but also deepened her empathy and understanding of the human experience.

Now, as a counselor, Erin brings the same compassionate, non-judgmental approach, offering clients a safe space to explore their emotions, relationships, and personal challenges. Her practice is rooted in the belief that everyone has the capacity for growth and healing, and her goal is to empower clients to transform overwhelming emotions into manageable and meaningful insights.

Erin comes to her counselling practice with experience as a Sexual Health Educator, where she supported individuals and groups of all ages through concerns related to sexuality and sexual health. This experience informs her compassionate, non-judgmental approach, creating a safe and welcoming space for clients to explore their experiences, relationships, and personal challenges.

1. What inspired you to pursue a career in counselling?

As is often the case in life, its many twists and turns have led me to where I am now, including my journey to a career in counselling. My long-standing interest in psychology led me to earn a degree and gain valuable experience through research and volunteering. However, my role as a Health Promotion Coordinator truly ignited my passion for counselling. Seeing the challenges people face and the positive impact of compassionate support has revealed how deeply fulfilling it is to help others navigate their struggles and find healing. This realization inspired me to pursue a career in counselling, where I am eager to bring the same empathy and support that transformed my perspective.

2. What aspects of your practice ignite your passion the most?

I am interested in various areas, such as relational issues, transitions, family dynamics, depression, and anxiety. What truly excites me the most is the unique and personal aspects of each client’s experience. My experience working with survivors of sexual abuse and assault has been especially rewarding, being a part of their unique and individual healing journeys.

3. How would you describe your guiding principles and methodology in your practice?

Change often arises from discomfort and can be challenging, as we frequently face situations beyond our control. As a counsellor, I see myself as a supportive guide, working alongside clients as they navigate this process of change. I approach this work with deep humility and respect for the courage it takes to confront personal challenges. My approach integrates several methods, including Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT), feminist perspectives, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which guides my understanding of the human experience.

While these techniques inform my practice, I believe in each individual’s natural capacity for growth. My primary goal is to work collaboratively with clients to process their emotional experiences, helping them transform difficult and overwhelming emotions into more manageable and understandable ones.

4. Tell us a little bit about what you like to do outside of work!

I am a huge nature lover! Growing up in Yukon, being outside was a huge part of my life and I’ve brought that into my adulthood. You can catch me out mountain biking, skiing, hiking, paddling, or really anything that involves the outdoors.
