Mackenzie Smith

Graduate Counsellor, she/her

About Mackenzie

Mackenzie has completed her Master’s degree in Counselling and is excited to be continuing on at Lynn Valley Counselling. Mackenzie works with people dealing with a wide range of difficulties, including depression, anxiety, self-esteem issues, relational issues, stuckness, and grief and loss.  She sees individuals, from children to adults, and couples as well.

Mackenzie spent her early years moving in an overpacked van between Nova Scotia and the West Coast before her family finally settled in Vancouver. She has lived and worked in many Canadian cities and abroad before moving to Montreal in 2005 where she completed an entirely unrelated undergraduate degree in Creative Writing.  She resettled back in Vancouver where she is often walking with her dog, traveling to the Gulf Islands, writing short stories, thrifting or spending time with friends and family.

Approach to Counselling

Mackenzie is compassionate, open-minded  and brings a deeply non-judgmental approach to her practice. She believes in creating a safe, welcoming environment where clients feel seen and valued for who they are. Her natural curiosity allows her to explore each client’s unique story and innate resilience using humour, creativity and connection. She is committed to social justice, and anti-oppressive practices.

Mackenzie has completed Somatic Experiencing Intermediate 1 training and is happy to integrate somatic therapy in her work with clients. The body holds wisdom that can often guide emotional processing by attuning to the nervous system’s response to both the hardships and the places of healing in our lives.

Mackenzie is also training in Janina Fisher’s Trauma Informed Stabilization Treatment (TIST) which incorporates parts work, mindfulness and somatic techniques. TIST can help clients broaden their understanding of themselves and cultivate a sense of self-compassion.

Mackenzie also draws from various other therapeutic modalities including Attachment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).
